Smoke Alarms: New Scottish Legislation [2021]

When it comes to smoke alarms, Scottish legislation has changed. Introduced in February 2019, the change applies to all households in Scotland and must be met by February 2022. As this time draws near and comes into action next month, HWUK Services have outlined exactly what you need to do to ensure that your home meets these new regulations.

New legislation: What's changed?

The Scottish Government have introduced new standards for fire and smoke alarms in all homes to come into action from February 2021. From this date, every home in Scotland must have:

A smoke alarm in the living room and in circulation spaces such as hallways and landings

A heat alarm in every kitchen

All alarms ceiling mounted and interlinked

A carbon monoxide alarm where there are fuel-burning appliances (such as boilers, fires, heaters, wood burners and stoves), or where there is a flue.

What happens if I am unable to get a smoke alarm installed by February 2021?

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the Scottish government have since delayed the deadline of the essential need of installing a smoke alarm system in your home. Given the difficulty that homeowners face seeking to make the necessary changes to their homes' safety in this climate, Kevin Stewart, Minister for Local Government and housing said:

“Given the impact of COVID-19, and the difficulties this is likely to create for people seeking to install new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, we have listened to concerns and decided to ask the Scottish Parliament to delay implementation.

“If this delay is approved, we will continue to work with partners to spread awareness of the changes before the new deadline. Our focus will be on supporting householders to ensure satisfactory fire alarms are installed so we can improve the safety of their homes.”
